Introduction
Qambel Maran: Syriac Chants from South India is a 66-minute CD of 29 East Syriac liturgical chants, released by Pan Records (Netherlands) under their ethnic series and produced by the Christian Musicological Society of India. The recordings feature CMI priests from Mannanam monastery and Syriac choirs from St John’s Church, Konthuruthy and St Mary’s Forane Church, Pallipuram, Cherthala. Rev. Dr. Joseph Palackal, founder-president of the CMS India, assembled the project; texts were drawn chiefly from the collection of ancient Syriac books at St Joseph’s Monastery, Mannanam. The accompanying 16-page booklet provides transliteration, translation, and musical notes; further material is on the Aramaic Project website.
The CD spans the breadth of Malabar East Syriac music - from chants attributed to St Ephrem the Syrian through the Portuguese period, when Latin devotions were translated into Syriac, to hymns for weddings, Marian feasts, and funerals. The 29 tracks are grouped in five sections: the Liturgy of Hours, the Raza, services for the dead, Syriac translations of Latin chants, and chants for special occasions. For a detailed review of each track and its liturgical context, see M Thomas Antony, “Qambel Maran - Syriac Chants from South India: A Review and Liturgical Music Tradition of Syriac Christians Revisited” (Nasrani.net, 2008). Check the links below each chant for more information and other recordings of the chants.
The CD booklet and the Aramaic Project provide transliteration and English translation of the hymns, but not the original Syriac text. What follows is an attempt to supply that omission: each track transcribed from manuscript and printed sources. Liturgical rubrics and refrains are shown in red; where a recording omits verses, the gap is noted inline.

ܡܫܲܡܫܵܢܵܐ: ܢܨܲܠܸܐ ܫܠܵܡܵܐ ܥܲܡܲܢ.
Text from Methodus Officiorum Pro Diebus Festivis Collecta by Kalappurakal Andreyos Malpan, 1909, reprinted in 1959, page 30. This way of chanting Awun d’washmayya, with verses alternating between the celebrant and the choir, is unique to the Malabar tradition.
After the word ܚܵܘ̈ܒܲܝܢ (our debts), the Chaldean and Syro-Malabar Churches add the phrase ܘܲܚܛܵܗܲܝ̈ܢ (and our sins) as found in Luke 11:3. The Assyrian and Ancient Churches of the East use what is found in Mathew 6:9-13, without ܘܲܚܛܵܗܲܝ̈ܢ

Psalm 95 - ܡܙܡܘܪܐ ܨܗ. This is a farced Psalm, with various farcings used as refrain throughout. The Assyrian/Chaldean texts use a different Psalm farced with Hallel Hallel, see Darmo 1961, Vol I, p. ܬܩܣܙ, 388

II. Chants from the Raza
10. Sliwa Dahwa Lan
Onitha d'qanke sung at the opening of the Malabar Raza: the celebrant offers the cross for the people to venerate.

11. O Dezdamman
Turgama before the biblical reading. The vocable inja at each line-end — absent from the text — fills the metre; a feature common to the Malabar tradition and the Chaldean/Assyrian traditions.

Text from Pareparambil, Aloysius, ed. Ordo Missae Syro-Chaldaeo-Malabaricae cum Translatione Latina. Puthenpally: M. T. S. Press, 1912., page ܣܘ. I was unable to find this hymn in the books of the Assyrian or Chaldean Churches - however, some Maronite texts seem to contain certain verses found in this one - needs more investigation.
The Christology of the Church of the East propounds that in the M’shiha are two Kyane (Human and Divine natures), and two Qnome (their individuated essences), in one Parsopa (person). This hutama, if it is of eastern origin, must have been modified after the Synod of Diamper to fit the Roman Catholic understanding of Qnoma as “person” - since only one Qnoma in Christ is mentioned here.
III. Chants from the Services for the Dead
14. Qambel Maran
Madrasha from the short office for the dead, in solo-and-refrain form. On the CD this is sung by Fr Abel Periappuram CMI

Text from Kthawa D’theshmeshta Dahlap Annide, St. Joseph’s Press, Mannanam 1921. This hymn is also found in two editions of the Assyrian Annida text - In Ktawa d'qurastha d'annide bnay alma w'bnay edtha akhad, Baghdad, Iraq 1985, p. 365, and in Service of the Qurbana of the Dead, Mar Narsai Press, Trichur, 1984, p. ܝܓ
The Assyrian text uses ܚܢܘܟ (Enoch) instead of ܢܘܚ (Noah) here. I was unable to find the Chaldean funeral text to compare.
15. La Tekre Lakh
From the funeral service for lay people; sung during the procession from home to church.

[remaining verses omitted]
Text from Kthawa D’theshmeshta Dahlap Annide, St. Joseph’s Press, Mannanam 1921. The text is the same in the Assyrian funeral order, where it is titled ܦܣܘܩܐ (Pasoqa). It is arranged as multiple H’paktha, with each H’paktha consisting of pairs of verses shown here. There is an ‘unaya mentioned before the body of the hymn as well, which is missing in the Malabar version (the unaya interestingly shows up in the Malayalam translation)
